A Cultural Canoe Experience by Hawaiian Canoe Club

OCEAN-C stands for Outrigger Canoe Experience & Ancient Native-Culture

Hawaiian Canoe Club’s recreational division is offering “OCEAN-C”, a cultural/canoe experience in two parts:

  • An educational presentation on the history of the Polynesian ocean culture that developed over 3000 years ago and spread to the Hawaiian islands around 300 AD.

  • An outrigger canoe paddling tour with paddling instruction, and an overview of the history of Kahului Harbor.

WHAT:  Two hour cultural/outrigger canoe adventure in historic Kahului Harbor. Starting with a 20 minute video on Hawaiian volcanoes, ancient Polynesians, their voyaging canoes, and how they navigated without instruments; followed by paddling instruction, and one hour in an outrigger canoe.

Be prepared to wade up to your knees when launching. While paddling you may experience some sea splash. Wear clothing that can get wet. All valuables will be stored and locked, under supervision. Water safety equipment is provided.

WHEN:  (weather and water conditions permitting)

  • Sunday Mornings at 9:30am, for cruise ship passengers

  • Monday Mornings at 8:00am, for cruise ship passengers

WHERE:  Hoaloha Beach Park at Kahului Harbor. Meet under the thatched roofed traditional Hale.

WHY:  A unique, exciting, fun, educational, and cultural experience in the less traveled north shore of Maui.
